Primary Source Documents

You can search our online catalog for books containing primary source material.

Try a keyword search, for example:  "Personal narratives" and Vietnam; or "Personal narratives" and "World War II"- be sure to use these quotation marks so the terms are searched as phrases. Also try subject searches, for example: World War, 1939-1945 - Personal Narratives;  United States History Civil War 1861 1865 Personal Narratives.

Ye Olde Print Indexes

Computer databases, with the exception of JSTOR, often don't go back in time far enough for History students.  To find articles from the olden days, especially from popular periodicals, try these old print indexes:

Humanities Index  – An index to journal articles in the humanities. We have the print version in our Periodicals Room from 1907 to 2000.  AI3.H85

New York Times Index –  Periodicals Room, AI21.N45. Print index to the New York Times newspaper from 1939 - 1999; full text available from June 1980 to present via Lexis Nexis Academic.  The Periodicals room holds the newspaper on microfilm for the years 1939 through 2009.

Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature –  An index to popular magazines beginning in 1900. We have the print version from 1900 to 2000 in our Periodicals Room.  AI3.R48  Also see International Index to Periodicals 1907 - March 1965.

Religion Index One –  An index to articles in religion from 1949 to 2007, located in the Periodicals Room.  The online full text version is ATLA Religion Database with ATLAS Serials.

Social Sciences Index –  An index to journal articles in the social sciences. We have the print version in our Periodicals Room from 1907 to 2000.  AI3.S62

    Full text of many reference sets and encyclopedias notably the Encyclopedia of Small Business, Beacham's Guide to the Endangered Species of North America, and St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture; The TEL and ACA GVRL sets contain different titles.
